NEW YORK CITY – The Old Farmer’s Almanac has good news for the Bing Crosby romantics who shed tears at the thought of a white Christmas: it sees a picturesque winter scene on the way for Christmas morning.

The almanac, which has been published since 1792 and shouldn't be confused with the unrelated Farmers’ Almanac, published merely since 1818, predicted Dec. 25 weather for every region of the country.

Across the Northeast, it says, "It’s been messy, miserable weather with a mix of rain and snow. However, there’s good news ahead. It should be a snowy, picturesque Christmas Day."

The Old Farmer's Almanac doesn't use satellite data or other methods to make its predictions, but rather a secret mathematical and astronomical formula based on things like the moon's pull on the atmosphere, for example.

It's prediction, however, differs from other long-term forecasts. AccuWeather meteorologists expected the chance of snow in the Northeast to be under 25 percent when they released their long term forecast last month.

And historical data gathered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggests there's just an 11 percent chance of snow falling on Central Park on the big day.
