Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. A New York State mask mandate will stay in place while Governor Kathy Hochul appeals an earlier ruling by a Nassau County court that challenged masking in public schools. The first ruling came down late on Monday evening and led some schools to scramble to change their policies by Tuesday morning – only to change them back once again. (Associated Press)

  2. Wilbert Mora, a 27-year-old NYPD officer, died on Thursday afternoon. He was one of two officers shot on Friday afternoon in Harlem. The incident was the first time two officers were killed in the line of duty since 2014. (Gothamist)

  3. Mayor Eric Adams want NYPD officers to live within the limits of New York City, rather than the 30-mile radius they are currently allowed, which includes neighboring counties. That change needs to be made via the state legislature. The Police Benevolent Association raised concerns over the high price of living in NYC. (New York City Patch)

  4. New Yorkers woke up to a "sickly smell" on Tuesday, while a fire burned at the Eastern Metal Recycling Terminal in Newark, New Jersey. The smoke was smelled all the way in Forest Hills, Queens, according to Twitter users. (New York City Patch)

  5. A coalition of delivery workers celebrated alongside AOC and other elected officials after they gained the right to use bathrooms in the restaurants they deliver from, as well as transparency over how they receive tips. (The City)
