SmartAsset analyzed the estimated cost of necessities in the largest U.S. cities, applying the 50/30/20 budget rule for both single adults and families of four.

The 50/30/20 budget rule provides a framework for supporting financial stability: 50 percent of a household’s income is allocated to necessities, 30 percent for discretionary spending, and 20 percent for long-term goals.
This year's list saw San Jose, Ca. beat New York City for the top spot. A single adult living in San Jose would need to make $147,430 a year in order to live comfortably.
Indianapolis is the least expensive for an adult to live comfortably. It takes an estimated salary of $85,197 to comfortably support a single adult.
