Trump Changes Mind, Won't Throw Out 1st Pitch Before Yankees Game

The president says meetings on the coronavirus will prevent him from being able to be at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 15.

NEW YORK, NY — Just three days after saying he would, President Donald Trump now says he will no longer be able to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before a New York Yankees home game in The Bronx next month.

"We will make it later in the season," the president tweeted on Sunday.

The Yankees just began a 60-game regular season that will conclude on Sept. 27

Trump's plan three days ago was to throw out the first pitch prior to the Yankees' scheduled Aug. 15 home game against the rival Boston Red Sox that's set to start at 7:07 p.m. He said his friend Randy Levine, the ball club's president, asked him to. He made the announcement as he hosted Yankees Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera at the White House to mark the return of baseball amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But now, Trump says it is his "strong focus on the China Virus, including scheduled meetings on Vaccines" that will prevent him from doing so.
