- At least four violent incidents, mainly shootings and killings, took place over the weekend, leading to the death of multiple people, including a woman who's body was found in a plastic bag in a bin near Yankee Stadium. (New York City Patch)
- A fire broke out in a 34-story office building on Lexington Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets Monday, injuring seven people, four of whom were sent to the hospital. The building is home to the co-working company WeWork. (New York City Patch)
- Emmy-winning actress Edie Falco advocated on Monday against New York's horse-racing industry, which receives over $230 million per year in state subsidies. Falco and animal rights advocates contend the industry is exploitative to both horses and workers alike. They support a bill in the state legislature to shift the industry's subsidies to support education and social programs. (New York City Patch)
- A detainee on Rikers Island died Monday. Tarz Youngblood, 38, was the first person to die in a city jail facility in 2022, while last year saw a total of 16 deaths. The cause of death remains under investigation, and Youngblood had been detained at Rikers since September. (Gothamist)
- A judge ruled that a Crown Heights family could remain in their brownstone, which has been in the family since the 1950s when they were the first Black family to move in on the block. The brownstone's tenants, The Robinsons, contended that they are victims of "deed theft," and are the rightful owners of the building, leading to an attorney general investigation. Looking for a healthy alternative to that mid-week glass (or three) of wine? Our partners at Betera set out to create beverages that were sophisticated and flavorful enough to drink at cocktail hour but with zero hangover risk. (Their motto is “Drink like there’s tomorrow.”) Betera's drinks are designed by a Michelin-starred chef using natural botanicals — they're lightly effervescent, sippable, refreshingly bitter and at home in a stem glass or in a highball on the rocks. Betera offers three recipes — Rhubarb-Hibiscus, Elderflower-Lime and Ginger-Orange. We’ve tried all three and loved them equally — we recommend the mixed case as a great place to start.Betera has extended their 15% discount on first orders to Daily readers, in appreciation for the enthusiastic response so far.
