NEW YORK – Drivers in the Empire State are getting newly designed license plates – and they're being asked to help choose them.

Governor Andrew Cuomo released five plates, each showing different images. One has the new bridge over the Hudson named after Cuomo's father, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo. Another three are inspired by the Statue of Liberty while the fifth shows the NYC skyline opposite a rural scene.

The state's motto "Excelsior" is on four of the designs.

The re-design coincides with a move to make the state's license plates more visible, the governor's office said.

"License plates are a symbol of who we are as a state and New Yorkers should have a voice and a vote in its final design," Cuomo said.

Voting takes place on the governor's website and at the Great New York State Fair, which starts Aug. 21 in Syracuse. The polling will close Sept. 2 with the new plates available in April next year.
