Whoopi Goldberg Harangues De Blasio Over Bike Lanes On 'The View'

The mayor went on the talk show to tout his new health care initiative. Then he got hit by the wrath of Whoopi.

NEW YORK — Bill de Blasio got a whooping on live TV. The mayor's attempt to tout a new health care initiative on "The View" Wednesday got derailed by an anti-bike lane diatribe from co-host Whoopi Goldberg.

De Blasio started his segment discussing his plan to expand health care options for the city's uninsured with the daytime talk show's other panelists, including Joy Behar and Meghan McCain.

But Goldberg later jumped in to harangue the mayor about protected bike lanes and large trucks jamming up city streets, a problem she said is exacerbated during storms.

"What feasibility study did you all do when you decided to put these in?" Goldberg said, according to a transcript. "I noticed they’re not on Madison Avenue, and they’re not Park Avenue."

"I come in every day, and I find that because you can’t make a turn anywhere, you can’t go straight anywhere," she added.

Goldberg expressed particular indignation about a bike lane on 10th Avenue, which she said had been narrowed from six lanes to two and a half. (Tenth Avenue has no protected bike lane but one starts at West 72nd Street after the thoroughfare becomes Amsterdam Avenue, according to the city's bike map.)

The "Sister Act" star also railed against cyclists who don't wear helmets and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan to toll cars entering central and lower Manhattan to help fund the MTA.

"I’m just saying you might want to take a look at some of this," Goldberg said. "Because now you have Cuomo coming in talking about congestion pricing, and I kind of feel like it’s a set up."

De Blasio defended the bike lanes as part of his administration's strategy to reduce traffic deaths, which fell to their lowest level in more than a century last year. He said they're located "all over the city in every kind of neighborhood."

"The Mayor likes bike lanes because they save lives and encourage people to get out of cars," de Blasio's press secretary, Eric Phillips, said on Twitter. "Whoopi doesn’t like bike lanes and wants the city to prioritize Manhattan drivers. We’ll have that conversation all day long!"
