57K Lose Power After Severe Storms Strike The Hudson Valley

A Clarkstown police car was smashed when a large tree fell on it, the town supervisor said.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Wild storms bringing strong winds swept through the Hudson Valley Wednesday night causing severe damage across the region.

"One of our police officers was on a call taking a report of a hit and run in Congers when his police car was hit by a large tree. The officer was not hurt but the car is significantly damaged," Clarkstown Town Supervisor George Hoehmann reported on Facebook.

Power outages were widespread. As of 10:30 p.m.:

  • Central Hudson: 12,771 customers were without power in Dutchess; 10,317 in Orange; 695 in Putnam; 4,567 in Ulster
  • O&R: 9,203 in Rockland; 5,872 in Orange
  • NYSEG: 6,363 in Dutchess; 1,157 in Orange; 1,318 in Putnam; 3,922 in Westchester
  • Con Ed: 911 in Westchester

The damage also closed roads across the region. "Please stay off the roads and away from downed wires," Hoehmann said.

As utility and public works crews continue to respond to the emergencies and power outages, residents are reminded to stay at least 30 feet away from any downed power line. Remember that power lines can be tangled and hidden in fallen trees. Regard all fallen lines as active.
