NJ Transit Train Strikes, Kills Man On Tracks, Delaying Commuters

NANUET, NY — A fatal accident in Rockland County brought the Wednesday evening commute to a crawl for train commuters.

The victim was a male in his twenties, according to the MTA. The agency said that his identity is pending.

On Wednesday, around 2:55 p.m., west of the Metro-North Railroad Nanuet station, a man not authorized to be on the tracks was struck by a southbound New Jersey Transit train, operating on Metro-North's Pascack Valley Line, as it pulled in to the Nanuet station. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

MTA police are leading the investigation, which is in its preliminary stages, according to the agency. Clarkstown police also responded to the scene.

The train was traveling approximately 25 miles per hour, described as an "appropriate speed for that location," at the time the man was struck. Six passengers and three crew members were on board, with no reported injuries on the train.

Based on video evidence, investigators said no foul play is suspected at this time.

Pascack Valley Line service was temporarily suspended during the investigation, and bus service was provided in both directions, between Pearl River and Spring Valley.
