Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Funminster Dog Show Helpers

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.

This week we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

MLK Day Cleanup at Bronx River Reservation
Volunteers will be collecting litter along the river on the Bronx River Pathway. All supplies will be provided, but please bring your own water. Volunteers should wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes. This is a great opportunity for large groups, families, and kids.
Date: 1/20 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; registration ends on 1/19

Disaster Action Team Duty Officer (Virtual)
The Disaster Action Team (DAT) provides emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families begin the process of recovery after devastating events such as a home fire. Duty Officers ensure timely activation and monitoring of these responses, both locally and regionally. This is a virtual opportunity and Duty Officers are on call for at least one 12-hour period per week.

Academic Mentors for Elementary School Students - Port Chester
Family Service Society of Yonkers is looking for Volunteer Mentors to help elementary-aged children at schools in Port Chester to build their reading skills. During these weekly one-on-one sessions, volunteers will be matched with a student and provided with reading materials and worksheets. This is an ideal opportunity for students, retirees and seniors.
Date: Tuesdays from 3:15-4:15 p.m.

Funminster Dog Show Event Assistant
Putnam Service Dogs' 6th Annual Funminster Dog Show is a popular event showcasing pet dogs who compete in 10 fun categories, including "Best Tail," "Best Ears," "Shaggiest Coat," and more. Volunteers are needed to help procure sponsors for this fundraiser event. The volunteers will be provided scripts, coaching, and a list of prospects from which to solicit support, including area veterinarians, pet supply stores, and businesses. Volunteers do not need any prior fundraising experience—just to be detail-oriented, organized, and believe in Putnam Service Dogs' mission! This is a virtual volunteer opportunity that averages 2-5 hours per week. Volunteers are invited to attend and assist with the Funminster Dog Show event on April 12 in Patterson as well.
