NY Assembly District 19: Ed Ra Challenged By Sanjeev Kumar Jindal

The long-time Republican incumbent Ra seeks reelection while newcomer and nonprofit founder, Democrat Jindal looks for a first term.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A first-time candidate looks to unseat a 12-year incumbent in Central Nassau County's 19th Assembly District. Democrat Sanjeev Kumar Jindal is a businessman from Williston Park who founded South Asians for Empowerment (SAFE.) Republican Ed Ra, from Garden City, is the current top Republican on the Ways and Means Committee.

Jindal, 45, bills himself as a "pro-choice candidate protecting abortion access" and points to his experience as a community leader, according to his official campaign biography.

"Republicans refuse to take guns off our streets and are determined to strip women of their freedom to make their own reproductive rights decisions. Sanjeev will fight to take guns off our streets and will always ensure that women have the right to choose. In Albany, Sanjeev will fully fund for our schools, work with law enforcement to keep our streets safe, promote community policing in our communities, fight to decrease state income taxes, fight to lower property taxes and our support small businesses."

Ra was first elected to the Assembly in 2010. He served as Ranking Member of the Assembly Education Committee, "where he fought against the state’s over-reliance on standardized testing and became a leading advocate for students with special needs," according to his official biography.

"Ra’s legislative priorities include emphasizing transparency and accountability in the state budget process, rooting out public corruption and promoting public safety. Ra led the effort to roll back and reform dangerous changes to the state’s bail and discovery laws."
