WATCH: Local Abortion Law 'Needs To Be Repealed': Council Member
The Town of North Hempstead is scheduling a public hearing about its 1971 rules for getting an abortion.

NORTH HEMPSTEAD, NY — In the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe. v. Wade, local governments are re-examining their laws.
In the Town of North Hempstead, a public hearing and vote are scheduled for Thurs., Aug. 4 to decide what to do with the town's abortion rules, specifically with a portion referred to as "Pregnancy Termination Facilities."
"It became clear that state and local laws are much more important on these topics," Council Member Veronica Lurvey, a guest on "Patch AM," said.

Lurvey said after scrutinizing the town code she found a provision "that really doesn't belong there."
The town's rules for abortion locations have been on the books since 1971, predating the original SCOTUS ruling on Roe. vs. Wade by two years.

North Hempstead law requires abortions to be done in a hospital or a location affiliated with a hospital.
Lurvey doesn't want the language clarified.
"It needs to be repealed," she said. "We shouldn't have the Town of North Hempstead putting this, really, it's a burden on a woman's right to choose."
