Annual Veterans Day Ceremony Unfolds At Southold American Legion Tuesday

Following the ceremony there will be a breakfast for veterans inside the American Legion, provided by the Southold Rotary Club.

SOUTHOLD, NY — Residents will gather Tuesday to pay tribute to the nation's heroes at an annual Veteran's Day ceremony in Southold.

The event takes place at the America Legion Griswold Terry Glover Post 803, located at 51655 Main Road in Southold, beginning at 11 a.m.

Following the ceremony, there will be a breakfast for veterans inside the Legion Hall provided by the Southold Rotary Club.

Then, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., veterans who reserved by October 2 can pick up their frozen turkey, ham, or turkey breast and dinner fixings, which have been provided by the Auxiliary Unit 803 and Long Island Cares veterans' program. The food can be picked up in the rear parking lot of Post 803.

According to American Legion Post 803 Commander David DeFriest, Veterans Day "honors all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, living and deceased. Its true meaning is to express gratitude for veterans' service, courage and sacrifice, which includes acknowledging the human cost of war and military service on individuals and their families."

The holiday was originally called Armistice Day, established in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, but was renamed in 1954 to honor all veterans of all wars, he said.
