Back-to-school season brings a mix of excitement and nerves — for students, parents and staff alike. Thankfully, Greenport is home to everyday school heroes who help make the transition smoother and the school year a little brighter.

From teachers and tutors to bus drivers, cafeteria staff, crossing guards and more, these caring individuals bring steady support and positivity to our schools. To recognize their many contributions — big and small — Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to salute the unsung heroes of back-to-school.

Please describe why this individual is a hero at your school.

This individual, otherwise known as Mrs. Kollen at GHS, serves as the transition coordinator and a special education teacher. She is truly a hero because she always goes above and beyond to make sure every one of her students feels supported and prepared for the future. As a special education teacher, she shows endless patience, compassion, and creativity in finding ways to help students both inside and outside the classroom. As the transition coordinator, she makes sure her students are gaining life skills and gaining resources they need for life outside of high school.

What makes her a hero is not just the hard work she puts in everyday, but the way she always believes in her students and doesn’t give up on them. Her dedication inspires everyone at GHS to dream big. She has dedicated 28 years of her career to the district showing how deeply she cares about her students, school, and community. Mrs Kollen has gone above and beyond for all!

What should your community know about this person?

Lauren Kollen, a mom of two from Southold, NY, has given 28 years of her career to Greenport High School and has never given up. Many, including both her daughters, have always looked up to her for the way she inspires and never gives up on her students. Her drive and passion for teaching is always shining bright!
