LONG ISLAND, NY — It's going to be a good day to stay inside and watch football.

With Thanksgiving being one of the heaviest travel days, expected to shatter records this year, many are checking the forecast to see what's in store for Thursday's weather.

According to Bill Goodman, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, Turkey Day is going to be a washout. Steady rain, totaling about three quarters of an inch, is expected to begin at daybreak and continue throughout the day. Rain should taper off by night, he added.

"It'll keep everyone inside for Thanksgiving dinner," Goodman said.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-50s with lows from the mid-30s to the 40s Thursday night.

Next, a cold front will move across Long Island, bringing much cooler air. Beginning on Saturday, high temperatures will reach just the lower 40s, plunging to lows in the middle-to-upper 20s Saturday night and continuing with "cookie cutter temperatures" for a number of days, into next week, Goodman said.

As everyone heads back to work and school Monday, highs are expected to reach the lower 40s, with a low in the mid-to-low 20s Monday night, he said.
