LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island could be in for some gusty winds and rain this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

According to Jay Engle, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Upton, beginning late Friday night and into Saturday morning, some fog and drizzle could develop. Although Saturday is slated to be mostly rain-free, there's a slight chance of showers later in the day, with fog and a chance of showers Saturday night.

On Sunday, the forecast is expected to evolve into soggy, he said. "It will be unsettled and cloudy this weekend — but not a washout until late Sunday night, when it will be cloudy and windy, with rain late in the day and in the evening hours."

On Sunday evening, Engle said, the chances of rain "amp up." Gusty winds of up to 40 miles per hour are expected Sunday ahead of the storm, with rain starting to come down Sunday night and into Monday morning. A total of about 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected, with higher totals near the East End, Engle said.

The precipitation is expected to clear out by Monday morning, he added.
