LONG ISLAND, NY — With Thanksgiving expected to be the biggest travel day in years, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, weather on Long Island, although cold, is expected to cooperate, according to the National Weather Service.

Brian Ciemnecki, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, said Thanksgiving is slated to be dry and windy. "It's going to be chilly, mainly in the mid-40s for highs on Thursday," he said.

Highs on the East End could be closer to 48 degrees, he said. But it will feel as though it's in the mid-30s to near 40 degrees, as a cold front comes through and "cools everything off for Thanksgiving," he said.

Also, sustained winds of 20 miles per hour, with gusts of 30 to 35 miles per hour and potentially higher, will also make it appear colder across Long Island, he said.

As for the rest of the week, Monday will see highs in the low 50s, with temperatures dropping to the mid-to-upper 30s at night. Tuesday's temps will also reach the mid-50s, with lows in the mid-to-upper 30s Tuesday night. Wednesday, highs will reach the 60s, with lows in the mid-to-upper 30s Wednesday night. On Thanksgiving, with highs in the mid-40s, those temperatures will drop to the upper 20s or lower 30s Thursday night. And, Ciemnicki said, the cold will remain blanketed across the region through Friday and Saturday, hovering in the mid-40s during the daylight hours.

A quick-moving weather system is also expected to move across Long Island Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing some rain and cooler air, he said.
