MATTITUCK, NY — Students at the Mattituck Junior-Senior High School were placed on lockdown Tuesday morning, according to Southold Town Police Chief Steven Grattan.

According to Grattan, the Sheriff's Department was executing a temporary extreme risk protection order at a residence near the school.

"Our agency was given advance notice and informed the school administration in case there were any inquiries about the law enforcement presence in the area," he said. " Out of an abundance of caution, the school initiated a lockdown, which remained in effect until the Sheriff's Department concluded its operation."
