LONG ISLAND, NY — Mother Nature will send a blast of wintry weather to Long Island this weekend, the National Weather Service said.
According to James Tomasini, meteorologist with the NWS office in Upton, Friday's temperatures are expected to range from the upper 30s to the lower 40s. On Saturday, rain is expected for Long Island. That rain should end Saturday night, with possibly some snow mixed in; no accumulation is expected.
On Sunday, snowfall is forecast across Long Island, with 2 to 4 inches expected, Tomasini said.

The snow will be caused by an area of low pressure that will be passing just offshore, bringing cold air to the region, he said.
The bulk of the snowfall is slated to begin Sunday morning, continuing through Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening and tapering off early Monday morning.

Temperatures Saturday could reach the high 50s with lows in the upper 40s; a "very cold air mass" is then expected to move in across Long Island through the following week, with highs in the upper 20s that will then drop to the upper teens on Wednesday in some locations, Tomasini said.
Gusty winds of up to 25 miles an hour could span the region Sunday night, with periods of reduced visibility during the snowfall, Tomasini said.
