GREENPORT, NY — Students in the Greenport Union Free School District were temporarily evacuated Thursday after the odor of propane was detected, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the incident took place at 8 a.m. at the school, located on Front Street.

As a precautionary measure, the school was temporarily evacuated while emergency personnel identified the source of the odor and shut off the gas service, police said.

To allow for necessary repairs and ensure the safety of all occupants, students were dismissed early for the day, police said.

No injuries were reported, police said.
