Local nonprofits are doing great work in the Northport area. Here are 10 that people may consider supporting this holiday season.
NORTHPORT, NY — If you’re like many of your Northport neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Northport area.

Here are 10 local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
1. The Chloe Belle Foundation: Brings joy to people fighting cancer, with a focus on children and young adults. Runs toy drives, fundraisers and other events to bring smiles to people diagnosed with cancer.
2. Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary: Serves as a sanctuary and home to a small family of rescued farmed animals that are much loved by community members who enjoy visiting them, as well as by the volunteers who help take care of them on a daily basis. The sanctuary also features original barns; botanical and vegetable gardens; a collection of native wildlife; a country store and the Lewis Oliver Vegan Education (L.O.V.E) Center.
3. Northport Cat Rescue Association: Rescues kittens and cats, provides them with foster homes, and aims to get them adopted into loving families.
4. Northport-East Northport Kiwanis Club: Strive to make a difference in the lives of those that need help.
5. St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary Northport Chapter: Has raised thousands of dollars for children at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson.
6. Northport Historical Society: A history museum, gift shop, and research library. The museum showcases a year-round exhibit that narrates the history of Northport, along with rotating exhibits that focus on more specific historical topics.
7. Greater East Northport Civic Association: Protect and enhance the quality of life in Greater East Northport by ensuring that community members are informed, engaged and have an active voice about community issues. The nonprofit is brand new and has "plans for doing great things for the Northport—East Northport community."
8. Long Island Cares — The Harry Chapin Food Bank: The organization, founded by Long Island musical legend Harry Chapin, is dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry and food insecure populations.
9. Grateful Paw Cat Shelter: Dedicated to the rescue, care and rehabilitation of stray, abandoned and abused animals in Huntington Township.
10. Ecumenical Lay Council: Provides a food pantry where those in need can come for food and support.
