Elwood 2025-26 School Budget Fails
The Elwood School District sought to pierce the tax levy, and yes voters did not meet the 60 percent majority needed to pass the budget.
ELWOOD, NY — Residents within the boundaries of the Elwood School District on Tuesday voted on the 2025-26 school budget.
The budget did not pass, as it had 982 yes votes to 830 no votes, but it required a 60 percent majority to pass since the proposed tax levy was pierced. The yes votes accounted for 54.19 percent of the total votes cast.
The district was one of three on Long Island seeking to pierce the cap.

The district's proposed budget was $79,395,286, up 3.43 percent from last year's. The proposed tax levy was $55,374,759, up 4.20 percent. The levy is above the allowable limit of 1.29 percent.
The district's current budget is $76,760,609, and the current tax levy is $53,142,763.

Elwood voters also decided on one vacant board of education seat.
- Deborah Weiss: 1,178 votes
- Vashmir Pascal-Turner: 496 votes
Weiss, the incumbent vice president, will serve a three-year term.
"The district thanks the community for voting," the district stated.
