Local Veterans Honored With Parade By Harborfields’ Students

Dozens of local heroes were celebrated by students, including a Harborfields alum who recently returned from deployment.

GREENLAWN, NY — More than 40 veterans were honored at Washington Drive Primary School on Friday during a Veterans Day celebration that filled the Greenlawn building with music, flags, and thanks from students and staff.

The morning began with a special breakfast for veterans and their families, followed by a spirited parade where students waved flags, clapped, and sang patriotic songs in honor of their guests. Among those celebrated was Harborfields alumna Morgan Lange (Class of 2013), who attended the U.S. Naval Academy and recently completed her deployment.

First-grade teacher Joseph Acquaviva led the children in singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “God Bless America” while playing guitar, bringing the community together in a moving show of appreciation.

The hallway outside the cafeteria was transformed into a “Hall of Heroes,” featuring colorful artwork and written tributes created by students to recognize the bravery and sacrifices of service members.

After the parade, many veterans visited classrooms to share personal stories from their time in the military. The annual event is organized by teacher Susan Chmura, whose husband and father both served in the armed forces.
