Northport Police Blotter: Political Signs Stolen, Smashed
ALSO: A man was scammed after trying to sell his Xbox over Craigslist; and a woman was stuck in an elevator, police say.
NORTHPORT, NY — Check out some recent police incidents for the Northport Village area from Nov. 4 through Nov. 10.
The Northport Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.
- An Ocean Avenue resident on Nov. 4 reported that political campaign signs were stolen from his yard overnight. The man said he saw the signs around 8 p.m. Nov. 3, and when he left his residence around 9 a.m. Nov. 4, he saw that three of the four signs were gone. Police did not say which political candidate(s) the signs were for.
- Police were called to Seaview Avenue for a report of a possible stolen laptop on Nov. 4. The man told officers his laptop might have been stolen from his vehicle in East Northport. The man tracked his laptop using the Find My iPhone app, which pinged the laptop on Seaview Avenue. Later that day, the caller gave police an updated location of Franklin Street. The officer contacted the person who found the laptop, who said he found the laptop run over by a car on Park Avenue in Huntington and was attempting to figure out who it belonged to. The laptop owner got his computer back from the finder. The officer advised the caller to continue to pursue a report with the Suffolk County Police Department.
- Six kids were reportedly running down Sea Cove Road on Nov. 4 pulling and smashing lawn signs. Police could not find the kids.
- A group in a pickup truck was reportedly grabbing lawn signs on Washington Place on Nov. 4. An officer found a teenager who said he was playing a prank and gave back the political sign to the officer. The caller did not want their sign back or to press any charges at this time.
- Police were called to Waterside Avenue for a report of a Craigslist scam. A man told police that he sold his Xbox to someone from Houston, Texas. When the man received confirmation that the Xbox was delivered, he contacted the purchaser. The purchaser claimed that he needed additional funds from the seller, citing various reasons such as having limits to what he can send on Venmo. The purchaser requested that the seller send $1,000 directly to him, and he would send back the agreed upon sale price of the Xbox, plus the $1,000. The officer told the man that he fell victim to a scam.
- Police were called to Locust Road for a report of a loud party around 8:12 p.m. Nov. 8. The owner of the property agreed to lower the music. Police returned to the home an hour later after numerous calls. The homeowner immediately complied, and the owner was warned and admonished. Police returned again eight minutes later, and the area was found to be quiet.
- A beached boat was reported on Woodbine Avenue on Nov. 8. The owner said she would get BoatUS to respond as soon as possible.
- A beached boat was reported on James Street on Nov. 8. The owner said he would respond to retrieve it.
- Two people were stuck in an elevator on Bayview Avenue on Nov. 9. Police found a woman unable to get out of her elevator. An officer helped free her from the elevator.
- A woman said she left her bag in the back seat of a classic car the owner was letting her sit in on Main Street, and he unintentionally drove off with it on Nov. 9. While the officer was attempting to find the vehicle and owner on security cameras, the driver of the car returned the bag at the property owner's house.
