How safe is your child's school? Recent events, including last week's school shooting in Florida, have put student safety in the forefront, and one data compiler has revealed which Long Island school districts rank highest in this category.

Niche.com's list of the Safest School Districts for 2018, which was created using information from the U.S. Department of Education, the FBI, parent reviews and other data.

To compile the ranking, 50 percent was based on parent and student surveys on health and safety. Student absenteeism, suspensions and expulsions were also factored into the rankings, well as percentage of students referred to law enforcement and school-related arrests.

The Southampton School District was listed as the safest district on Long Island, and the second safest school in New York State. The rankings named Orchard Park Central School District in West Seneca as the safest district in New York.

There were 26 Long Island schools that made New York’s top 100 rankings.

  • No. 41— Hewlett-Woodmere Union Free School District
  • No. 42— Copiague Union Free School District
  • No. 47— Huntington Union Free School District
  • No. 52— Great Neck Public Schools
  • No. 57— Commack Union Free School District
  • No. 61— Mount Sinai School District
  • No. 62— Bay Shore Union Free School District
  • No. 67— Port Washington Union Free School District
