State Aid Drop for Northport Schools

Northport sees decrease, Elwood sees increase in 2013-14.

The State Department of Education released its preliminary district aid estimates for 2013-14 on Tuesday. A total of $20.81 billion was recommended statewide, a year-to-year funding increase of $610.30 million or 3.02 percent.

Northport-East Northport School District will receive a 4.29 percent decrease in state aid from last year, a $501,926 difference. Last year the district received $11,693,541. This year it will receive $11,191,615.

The highest aid decrease for Northport was in high tax aid. A greater portion of high tax aid will be directed to school districts with both lower wealth and high property taxes this year, according to the state.

Elwood School District will receive a 1.99 percent increase in state aid from last year, a $227,662 difference. Last year the district received $11,428,554, this year it received $11,656,216.

The highest aid increase for Elwood was in BOCES and special education. For 2013-14, aid to reimburse districts for expenditures for BOCES services in the 2012-13 school year will total $724.86 million throughout the state, an increase of $20.73 million.
