Police say the gun was owned by a Nassau County licensed pistol holder.

A GoFundMe page was created to support the teen's family. "My baby brother, Derek also know by many as Go-Go, has left behind an amazing mother Luz, and his four sisters, Tahessha, Shadarra, Kristal, and my self, Jasmine, who he adored and loved so much," his sister Jasmine Elise Vasquez wrote on the donation page. "He was only 15 years old taken suddenly from us. He was very outgoing, friendly, smart and just loved by so many."

The teen's older sister Shadarra Vasquez told Newsday that her brother never played with a gun before the accident. Cosme would have entered Glen Cove High School as a junior in September, the publication says.

The investigation is ongoing.
