Brooklyn Contra Dance Party

Where/When: Brooklyn Lyceum, 227 4th Ave, Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Come for a great night of community folk dancing to live music by Black River Ironworks. You’ll dance with several partners throughout the night (a great way to meet new people), no fancy footwork involved, and anyone can do it! All the dances are taught and walked through with instructions provided from the stage, by the Caller. It’s good ol’ fashioned fun right here in Brooklyn!

Halfway Hamill Live @ Freddy's Bar!

Where/When: Freddy's Bar, 627 5th Ave, Friday, Jan. 25 at 11 p.m.

Why Go: Making his NYC debut from the streets of Detroit is Halfway Hamill! Halfway Hamill’s music is true Detroit blue collar, melodic acoustic pop!

Alice in Wonderland at BAM

Where/When: Brooklyn Academy of Music, BAM Fisher Fishman Space, Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. & 3 p.m.

Why Go: Discover the madcap world of Lewis Carroll’s novel in this theater production from Canada incorporating puppets, mask theater, music and clever wordplay. The play features a set in which each book on the shelf becomes a door to the next adventure, and after the performance is through, a Q&A will follow

5 Week Self Defense Course for Adult Women and Transpeople

Where/When: Center for Anti Violence Education, 327 7th St, Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m.

Why Go: The Center for Anti-violence Education (CAE) is a multi-racial, intergenerational, community-based, nonprofit organization that develops and implements violence prevention programs. This five-week course is free to survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault, and is offered on a sliding scale based on income for everyone else. Free childcare is also available. This course includes effective, simple physical techniques, as well as discussions about safety and prevention. Runs Saturdays, 3 to 5:30 p.m. from January 12th to February 9th.

Where/When: The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park W, Sunday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m.

Why Go: “My Brooklyn” is a documentary about award-winning director Kelly Anderson's personal journey, as a Brooklyn "gentrifier," to understand the forces reshaping her neighborhood along lines of race and class. Having moved to downtown Brooklyn decades earlier, lured by cheap rents and alternative culture, Anderson watches as a massive speculative real estate boom and a plan to tear down the Fulton Mall, a vital African-American and Caribbean commercial district, threaten to erase the neighborhood's diversity in many senses.
