MAP: How Crime-Ridden Is Your Brooklyn Neighborhood?

A comprehensive ranking based on fresh NYPD data.

Map created by Ben Wellington. For an interactive version, click here.

People of New York City, rejoice. Ben Wellington — statistician, wizard, municipal treasure — has had his way with the NYPD’s unprecented public dump of incident-level crime data last week.

In a new post on his blog, I Quant NY — using police data from the first three quarters of 2015 and the city’s neighborhood census lines — Wellington has conveniently mapped and ranked NYC crime levels by neighborhood, as opposed to NYPD precinct, as they’ve always been mapped before.

The rankings, according to Wellington, account for population density and give equal weight to each of six felony categories: robbery, murder, grand larceny auto, grand larceny of motor vehicle, burglary and assault.
