Police Blotter: Crook Steals U-Haul Trailer from Third Ave Lot

Hitch a Ride

A crook stole a moving trailer from a parking lot on Third Avenue sometime between Jan. 18 and Jan. 24.

A 30-year-old employee of U-Haul told police that the trailer was sitting in their parking lot near Fifth Street, waiting to be transferred to another U-Haul location beginning on Jan. 18 at around 2 p.m. But a few days later, Jan. 24 at 12:33 p.m., they realized that it was gone. The crook got away with the trailer, worth $3,500. 

$1,000 Device Stolen from Depot. of Sanitation Truck

A crook stole a $1,000 device from a Department of Sanitation truck parked on Hamilton Avenue sometime between Jan. 19 and 21.

The 46-year-old DSNY employee told police that he parked his salt spreader truck in the garage between 14th and 15th streets at around 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 19. The driver said that the truck’s door was not locked and multiple employees have access to the garage. On Jan. 21 at 4:30 p.m., he found that someone had snatched a device called a “Compu-Spread 220 Black Box” from the truck, worth $1,000. 

The Voice on the Other End of the Line

After a Second Street resident lost his cell phone on Jan. 23, he decided to call it. And when a voice on the other end of the line said he wouldn’t give it back, he realized it was stolen.

The 38-year-old victim told police that he doesn’t know where or how he lost his smartphone, but when he called his number a man identified himself as “Jasper” and said he refuses to give it back. “I’ll have to think about it,” the voice told the victim. The crook got away with a $250 Droid.
