Police Blotter: Bandit Mugs Woman for Purse on Sixth Avenue

Purse Snatch on Sixth Avenue 

A crook mugged a woman for her purse, stealing $60 in cash, on Sixth Avenue on Dec. 8.

The 33-year-old victim told police that she was walking along Sixth Avenue and came to the corner of Garfield Place at around 1:24 a.m. when a crook, described as an Indian man standing about 5-foot-11 and weighing 160 lbs., approached her from behind and grabbed her purse. During the struggle, the victim fell to the ground and injured her right leg. As she fell, the crook stole her purse and ran away northbound on Sixth Avenue. The crook stole $60 in cash, her wallet, a few debit and credit cards, but dropped the bag. 

$6,000 in Cigarettes Stolen from Van

A crook stole over $6,000 worth of cigarettes from a pharmacy delivery van on Fourth Avenue on Dec. 8.

The driver, a 32-year-old man, told police that he parked the van belonging to CVS between Union and President streets at around 4:15 p.m. The crook entered the van through the unlocked back door and stole 56 cartons of various brands of cigarettes within a minute, worth $6,211 in total. 

Bike Stolen from Second Street Pole

A crook stole a $900 bike chained to a pole on Second Street on Dec. 8.

The 37-year-old victim told police that he locked his bike to a pole between Seventh and Eighth avenues at around 10 a.m. When he returned to get his two-wheeler at around 6p.m., it was gone. The crook got away with the man’s bike worth $906. 

Attempted Hoist Heist

Police arrested two crooks that posed as construction workers at a home on Prospect Park West and attempted to steal a $5,000 hoisting machine on Dec. 9.

The victim, who was running a construction crew at the site between Montgomery and Garfield places, told police that a man and woman showed up at the job wearing shirts with a fake company name and said their boss told them to remove the hoisting machine from the scaffolding. The crooks, a 26-year-old Hispanic woman and a 31-year-old Hispanic man, said they were hired as day laborers by the fake company and took the machine, valued at $5,000. Police arrested them shortly after they took the equipment. 

Another Construction Site Heist

A crook stole over $27,000 worth of equipment from a construction site on 12th Street on Dec. 9.

The company running the site, between Seventh and Eighth avenues, said that someone stole a motor, a jackhammer, vacuum grinder, electric cable and another machine sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The crooks got away with $27,200 worth in equipment.
