Trashed: Garbage Fills Two Blocks of 16th St. After Apparent Sanitation Mix-Up

Photos: when was the last time you saw trash strewn across your street like this?

SOUTH SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Residents living between 4th Avenue and 6th Avenue on 16th Street found their road strewn with trash on Monday. Bags of garbage blocked in cars, while some sacks had already been hit, spilling their contents across the road. Organic waste baskets hadn't been emptied, either.

One 16th Street resident said that sanitation workers had come by early in the morning to collect recycling. They also pulled trash bags to the street, he said, but workers that collect garbage never came by afterward. A second resident said that he's seen the same thing happen a few times during his five years living on the block.

Department of Sanitation spokeswoman Kathy Dawkins said that the trash would be cleaned up during Monday's 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. shift, but declined to provide a reason for why the apparent mix-up had taken place.
