EAST PATCHOGUE, NY — Nickesha and Shania Medley received the keys to a brand new home last week. The East Patchogue house was built by the mother and daughter, along with volunteers for Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk.

Work on the home, at 610 Scherger Ave., started almost exactly a year ago, and the process culminated with last Thursday's home dedication ceremony. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Habitat for Humanity CEO and Executive Director Lee Silberman and other officials were on hand to watch the Medley family receive the keys.

Nickesha and her daughter Shania Medley were living in an attic apartment in Valley Stream.

According to a news release from Habitat for Humanity, Nickesha Medley grew up without a permanent home herself and establishing a permanent, stable home for her own daughter was a goal.

"Due to financial circumstances, Nickesha had to change schools often and never had a permanent house to live in. She sought to provide a better life for her daughter; by participating in Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s homeownership program, she will be able to do just that. Nickesha says she looks forward to spending more time with her daughter in their new home and being able to provide her the stability to excel in school and further her education."

“I am so thankful for this generosity,” the elder Medley said.

“It has meant so much that I am able to be a part of building the walls that will shelter us and I am forever grateful to my new Habitat family and all the volunteers and sponsors. I hope my daughter feels the kindness, dedication and love shown to us through this partnership. It is a dream come true.”
