3 Nassau Hospitals Earn National Recognition For Diabetes Care Excellence
Awarded hospitals show an "unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being" of people living with diabetes while hospitalized.
NASSAU COUNTY, NY — Glen Cove Hospital, Plainview Hospital, and Syosset Hospital were named 2025 Recognized Leaders in Caring for People Living with Diabetes by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and The Leapfrog Group, Northwell Health announced Thursday.
The three hospitals are the only hospitals in New York state and among only 36 nationwide to earn the recognition, according to Northwell Health.
This prestigious designation honors hospitals that demonstrate an "unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of people living with diabetes during hospitalization," according to the network.

The program evaluates hospitals based on how they care for people with diabetes throughout their inpatient journey from admission to discharge. It is based on the ADA’s Standards of Care in Diabetes 2025 and Leapfrog’s standards for hospital safety and quality.
To earn recognition, hospitals must demonstrate consistent blood glucose (blood sugar) testing and hypoglycemia prevention protocols, specialized surgical preparation for individuals with diabetes, personalized insulin and nutrition planning, and robust discharge planning for high-risk patients.

"This achievement reflects our hospitals’ mission to provide high-quality, compassionate care that addresses the unique needs of patients with diabetes," said Kerri Scanlon, RN, FAAN, president of Glen Cove, Plainview, and Syosset hospitals, in a news release. "To be the only hospitals in New York state recognized this year is a tremendous honor and testament to our team's commitment and expertise."
Hospitals are assessed on the presence of the practices, as well as on their execution. Randomly selected patient care records are reviewed.
"This award shows what’s possible when evidence-based practices are fully integrated into the patient care experience," said Barbara Keber, MD, chairperson, medical board of family medicine, Glen Cove Hospital.
Every year, approximately 8 million Americans living with diabetes are hospitalized, facing heightened risks of serious complications, including amputations, comas, and even death.
Poorly managed medication regimens, inadequate discharge planning, and exposure to hospital-acquired infections can have "especially severe outcomes for this vulnerable population," Northwell Health stated.
