PLAINVIEW, NY — Soaring oil prices mean more pain at the pump for New York residents, with the average gas price already well above the $4 mark across the state.

Gas prices are surging around the country, and are hitting record highs here on Long Island, where the average price for a gallon of regular gas is now $4.353, according to AAA, which is right in line with the average for the state. It's big jump over the last few months, considering the average price a year ago was $2.805.

With the importing of Russian oil about to stop, it's unlikely residents will see relief at the pump any time soon.

According to AAA, the current surge in gas prices is fueled mainly by the Russian invasion of Ukraine causing instability in the market. Though countries around the world, including the United States, are release oil from their strategic reserves, it is not enough to make a up the difference.
