After 4-Car Nassau Crash, 1 Facing Charge In Accidental Shooting

Police say four people were hurt in the crash Thursday night. It started with an accidental shooting inside a home.

PLAINVIEW, NY — A Plainview man has been charged with unlawfully possessing a weapon after police said he accidentally shot a teenager in the neck and was inside a vehicle that was subsequently involved in a four-car crash.

Brian Gregg, 25, of Benmore Court, was cleaning a gun Thursday evening when it accidentally fired, hitting a 17-year-old friend of his step-brother, Nassau County police said. The trio hopped into a car and headed to a hospital. While heading north on Plainview Road, the three were involved in a four-vehicle crash that injured an off-duty Nassau County police officer. The officer, who suffered minor injuries, dialed 911 and helped tend to the injured.

Four people were hurt in the crash and taken to hospitals for treatment. They are expected to survive. The 17-year-old who was shot was listed in serious but stable condition, police said.

Investigators later determined Gregg was not a licensed handgun owner and charged him. He was to appear in court when he's recovered from his injuries.

The crash closed Old Country Road and Plainview Road for hours Thursday night. All lanes have since reopened.

The Plainview Volunteer Fire Department said it worked the multi-vehicle crash scene.

"Due to the ongoing investigation by the NCPD we will not be posting anything further on this incident," the department said.

Video and photos taken at the scene and posted on social media appeared to show two SUVs that sustained major damage.
