PORT CHESTER, NY — A Port Chester police officer has been released from the hospital after being hurt in a wild, low-speed, multi-state chase, in which police say a suspect in a stolen car intentionally rammed a patrol car.

Early Friday morning, Port Chester police were alerted that Greenwich police were following a stolen vehicle on Putnam Avenue, heading towards the state line. PCPD were told the vehicle was reported stolen while it was left running unattended 10 minutes prior, in the Village of Mamaroneck.

Port Chester police attempted to stop the stolen car as it entered into Port Chester. However, the driver refused to stop, according to cops. The vehicle had lost a front tire and was traveling at 15 mph as it continued onto Putnam Avenue. The vehicle intentionally drove into Lyon Park in an attempt to evade police, officials said. The unexpected detour caused considerable damage in the park, police reported.

The stolen car continued onto Haines Blvd. where it again drove onto the lawns of homes, police said. At this time, the vehicle intentionally ran into the side of a marked police car. The stolen car then hit a second police car.

Now on Betsy Brown Road, entering into the Village of Rye Brook, both police departments continued to try and stop the stolen car, but the driver continued on at slow speeds and on just three tires.

While attempting to stop the car, a marked PCPD unit was struck on the passenger side causing the vehicle to go off the road and crash into a tree. This caused a uniformed officer to be injured. He was treated and released from the hospital.

The stolen car continued on Betsy Brown Road into Crawford Park where it drove across the grass and once again caused considerable damage to a public park. The stolen car then struck some bushes in the park and the driver tried to flee on foot.

The suspect was eventually captured by Rye Brook and Port Chester police.

In the end, an officer was injured, several police cars were damaged and both public and private properties were destroyed.

A 40-year-old from Mount Vernon was arrested on a laundry list of charges related to the pursuit.

"We again remind everyone that please do not leave your car running unattended," the Port Chester Police Department said in a statement released after the slow, but treacherous chase. "Unfortunately, this was the case with this vehicle and the actions of the alleged suspect caused harm to our officers."
