Head Impaled On Broken Signpost After Man In Port Chester Stumbles On Sidewalk

PORT CHESTER, NY — A chilling accident and a tense rescue ended on a positive note, thanks to the quick work and expertise of Port Chester police and firefighters.

On Sunday night, the Port Chester Police Department received a 911 call reporting an injury victim on Horton Avenue in the village. At the scene, officers and EMS learned that the accident victim had been walking on the sidewalk, when he fell and became impaled on a broken sign post on private property.

The victim was conscious and alert, but the broken sign post impaled his head.

Port Chester firefighters soon arrived and the collected first responders made a plan to cut the sign post, stabilize the victim, and extract him from the precarious situation.

After about 45 minutes, police say, the victim was stabilized, cut from the post and taken to Westchester Medical center.

"This is a clear example of the level of professionalism and training that exists while working together for a common goal," Port Chester police said in a statement posted on social media. "[A] Good ending to a very serious situation."

The victim was conscious and alert as he was rushed to the hospital.
