'Holding Space' Fills the Heart At The Clay Art Center In Port Chester

PORT CHESTER, NY — The best art offers a momentary glimpse from another's perspective and the Clay Art Center has found a way to translate singular experiences into something shared in a medium that helps give rise to the very notion of community.

The Clay Art Center announced that it will be presenting "Holding Space," an online invitational exhibit co-curated by Anika Major, celebrating PRIDE Month through ceramics. It will take place between June 1 and June 30.

In this new exhibition, the Clay Art Center says that artists were invited to share their voices as LGBTQIA+ individuals "through ceramic vessels that carry the weight of lived experiences, and make space for growth and healing."

The artworks in the exhibit will provide "concrete evidence of each artist's own existence, and in the utility and visual aspect of taking space, these vessels create a solid remembrance of a past self that is shared with others who are in their own metamorphosis."

The new exhibit is an "acknowledgement of the artists as individuals, and a reflection of the space they are making for others in their journey."

Six artists from six different states will be coming together in "Holding Space," presenting their contemporary ceramics ranging from functional to investigative sculptures exploring the ideas of social class and materiality, according to the Clay Art Center.

The articipating artists are: Meredith Bradley, Jess Cheng, Lily Gray, Ash King, Kenya Moffett-Garner, Coco Raymond and Chase Travaille.

The Clay Art Center is a nationally recognized non-profit center for the advancement and practice of ceramic arts offering exhibitions, clay classes for adults and children, a shop selling handmade ceramics, studio spaces for clay artists and outreach programs in the community.
