Police: Items Taken in Port Chester Burglary Spree Recovered

Break-ins while residents are at home called unusual.

Some items taken in a spree of burglaries in Port Chester this week have been recovered, according to Port Chester Police.

Following the arrest of a Port Chester man on burlgary charges, village police say the rash of break-ins was unusual because about half of them took place when someone was at home. In one case, a victim thought the noises she heard were another family member coming home.

Lt. James Ladeairous said investigators have recovered items stolen in the burglaries following the arrest of Luis Alberto Pimentel, 23, of 18 Bent Ave. Port Chester. However, he said the items are still being processed to determine which home they were taken from.

Although no one was injured in the burglaries, the law enforcement community is always especially concerned when faced with break-ins that take place when homes are occcupied because of the risk of confrontation, violence and even death.

Pimentel was arrested following a spree of burglaries in Port Chester over two days, with a burglar breaking rear windows to gain entry to homes. The spree ended when a resident of Fairview Place, Ladeairous said, was awakened by the sound of breaking glass and saw a person dressed in dark clothing coming out of the basement.

An emergency call to police about this break-in led Port Chester, Rye Brook and Rye police to set up a search area which in turn led to an hour-long chase in dark back yards at around 2 a.m. The chase ended when Pimentel was found hiding under a car on Spring Street.

But Ladeairous said Pimentel did not come with police quietly. Pimentel is accused of grabbing for a police officer's gun as he was being arrested. Pimentel is being held at the Westchester County Medical Center, where he was brought for treatment of injuries from the chase and his arrest. He faces a hearing in Port Chester Village Court.

Police got a break in the last incident, Ladeairous said, because a witness say the direction in which the accused-burglar ran off.

Pimentel, police said, is also under investigation in connection with seven burglaries in Port Chester and Rye. Port Chester Police were also familiar with Pimentel from incidents including one in December 2012 in which he was charged with disorderly conduct.
