Port Chester Firefighters Battle Blaze At Highrise Apartment Building

A report of smoke on the sixth floor led to the discovery of a fire on the second floor, on Sunday evening.

PORT CHESTER, NY — Port Chester firefighters quickly controlled a fire at a multi-story apartment building this weekend.

On Sunday, at around 6 p.m., the Port Chester Fire Department was dispatched to the building on Terrace Avenue on a report of smoke on the sixth floor, but even as crews were responding, a fire was reported on the second floor of the residential building.

Tower Ladder 2 and Rescue 40 arrived on scene first along with Cars 2392 (Chief Storino) and 2393 (Chief Melillo) to find fire visible. A 10-75 (Working Fire) call was put out bringing more resources to the scene.

Firefighters forced entry to the apartment and searched for victims as other firefighters stretched a hose line and quickly knocked down the fire. One resident of the building was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to a nearby hospital. The incident was placed under control in just under an hour, according to fire officials.

Fire crews and equipment from Port Chester, Rye Brook, City Of Rye, Purchase, Town of Mamaroneck, Tarrytown, Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS, and the Port Chester Police Department were on the scene of the blaze. Meanwhile, the Village Of Mamaroneck Fire Department, the Harrison Fire Department and the West Harrison Fire Department covered calls in Port Chester while Port Chester firefighters were engaged at the scene of the apartment fire.

It was a busy night for the department. Standby units handled an alarm in Rye Brook and shortly after being released, Port Chester units were called to a dryer fire in a laundromat on Willett Avenue.
