TV Scam Spreads to Port Chester

Box with "new $1,700 TV" turns out to be junk.

First it was rocks in Rye. Now it's old, worthless speakers in Port Chester.

A scam artist working out of a minivan has struck again, offering a deal on a brand new, $1,700 TV that sounds too good to pass up. But instead of getting a good deal, two Port Chester residents found themselves with worthless junk.

Police in Rye have already warned that someone peddling "new" TVs was selling what turned out to be a box filled with Rocks. Today, Port Chester Police warn that a scam artist has been working parking lots in the village.

A 71-year-old Port Chester man told police that at around 2 p.m. Wednesday he met a man in the Oak Street and Grove Street parking lot. The man offered to sell him a Spectrum television for $200. The victim took the deal, only to find out the TV box contained old speakers and parts of a TV stand.

About 30 minutes later, a 40-year-old Port Chester woman said she was offered the same deal on Westchester Avenue. She paid $400 for what she thought were two TVs, but turned out to be old speakers, too.

Police said they believe the same scam artist, driving a gray Dodge Caravan, is connected to both Port Chester incidents. In Rye, the scam artist there was also using a similar vehicle.
