2 Paddleboarders Rescued From Long Island Sound: Police

They were unable to return to shore due to high tides, police say.

MOUNT SINAI, NY — Two paddleboarders were rescued from the Long Island Sound Tuesday evening, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, the incident took place at 5:51 p.m. about a mile-and-a-half north of Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai.

Gabriella Carleo, 31, of Selden, and Selena Miranda, 26, of Farmingville, were aboard paddleboards on the Long Island Sound and found that they could not return to shore due to strong tides; they called 911, police said.

A Suffolk County Police Department aviation helicopter spotted the women, who had tied their paddleboards together, and gave their location to police officers Chris Defeo and Timothy Dillon aboard Marine Delta, police said. The officers pulled the women to safety.

In addition to the marine bureau and aviation section officers, the Miller Place Fire Department also responded, police said.

The women were not injured, police said.
