LI's Colonial-Era Spies To Be Celebrated Saturday On Culper Spy Day

There will be museum tours, invisible ink and musket demonstrations, re-enactors, and children's stories.

LONG ISLAND, NY — The Culper Spy Ring’s members have long been credited for helping colonial rebels win the colonial rebels turn the tide of the American Revolution. And this Saturday their heroic acts will be remembered at a series of events on their home base of Long Island on Culper Spy Day.

The ring provided key information to Gen. George Washington during the American Revolution which led to the United States' independence from Great Britain.

The deeds of Robert Townsend, a.k.a. Samuel Culper, Major Benjamin Talmadge, and Anna Smith Strong, will all be remembered this weekend.

The Three Village Historical Society will host events in Setauket and Stony Brook, including self-guided tours, colonial home building, a march around an encampment of reenactors, musket demonstrations, a sack race, and a children’s story hour.

There will also be toy-making, invisible ink demonstrations, colonial cooking, and augmented reality with 360xr, and a gift shop.

Locations will include the Setauket Neighborhood House, Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, Sherwood-Jayne Farm, Patriots Rock, the Long Island Museum, Caroline Episcopal Church of Setauket, and the Setauket Presbyterian Church.

Nearby Port Jefferson Village will also celebrate the day ay the Drowned Meadow Cottage Museum where there is an exhibit, "Privateers: Pirates with Permission,” which will highlight privateer attacks along the north shore of Long Island during the revolution.

There will be guided tours of the museum, colonial-themed storytelling for children, a candle-making exhibit, a scavenger hunt, and lemonade from Daughters of the American Revolution.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
