Save-a-Pet Rescues Starving, Neglected Pit Bulls in Mastic

Volunteers at Save-a-Pet Animal Rescue are nursing four starving, neglected pit bulls back to health after the dogs were discovered abandoned in a Mastic home, the organization recently announced.

Save-a-Pet said in a statement that the dogs, three females and one male, were being used for breeding, and were left alone in outdoor kennels during the February blizzard after the owner allegedly left the state.

Save-a-Pet president and founder Dori Scofield called the pit bulls a resilient breed that responds positively to love and proper care.

“It was heartbreaking to discover these dogs in the situation we found them in,” Scofield said. “Even though they were imprisoned in filthy conditions, starving, and riddled with sores, they greeted us with wagging tails."

The dogs are being treated for internal parasites, external sores, whipworm, hookworm, roundworm, giardia, coccidia and tapeworm, with one of them additionally being treated for heartworm. The organization said the dogs, who have been given the names Shamrock, Patty, Clover and Blarney (the male), are all under three years old.

"Luck shone down on these dogs, by helping us find and rescue them,” Scofield said. “But if you ask me, I think we are the lucky ones. These are wonderful dogs that have touched our lives here at Save-A-Pet. They all deserve a forever home as soon as they receive a clean bill of health."
