St. Charles Hospital Receives Patient Safety Award

Hospital recognized by Physicians' Reciprocal Insurers.

St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson has been deemed tops in a patient safety competition sponsored by one of the nation's largest medical malpractice insurers, Long Island-based Physicians' Reciprocal Insurers.

In 2011 the hospital began participating in a safety program called "Improving Patient Engagement by Active Rounding by Leadership" (i-PEARL), which "promotes patient care and safety through innovation and adherence to quality improvement principles," the hospital said in a release.

Through that program, various leaders visited newly admitted patients on a daily basis and immediately resolved any issues that arose, focusing in on matters such as physical comfort, communication, and planning and support during periods of high anxiety.
