WATCH: Coast Guard Rescues 4 From Disabled Sailboat Off LI Sound

The LI-based sailboat was hit by a rogue wave on Sunday night, chopping the vessel's mast off. A helicopter rescue saved the crew.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — On Sunday, a Mt. Sinai-based sailboat was hit by a rogue wave, de-masting the vessel and injuring all four of the crew members. The vessel, named Calypso, was 80 miles south of Montauk when the Coast Guard crew arrived.

The United States Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod responded to the scened. The Jayhawk helicopter crew had to battle heavy seas and tough conditions, but all four crew members were rescued safely, according to a Facebook post from the station.

The rescue lasted until darkness fell. According to Boston 25 News, "a rescue swimmer jumped into the pounding surf to assess the injured sailors and to place them in a rescue basket to get on board the rescue helicopter."

The sailors were suffering from bruised ribs and concussions.

The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod operates MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters and HC-144A Ocean Sentry fixed-wing aircraft and is responsible for the waters from New Jersey to the Canadian border.
