$450K Grant To Extend Hempstead Harbor Shoreline Trail

The trail will be extended by almost an extra mile.

The Town of North Hempstead has received a $450,000 New York State Regional Economic Development Council Initiative award that will fund a project to extend the Hempstead Harbor Shoreline Trail.

The recreational trail will be extended by 4,972 linear feet, making the total length of the trail close to two miles.

"This grant will enable the Town to extend the Hempstead Harbor Trail almost another mile along the shoreline, enhancing the experience even more,” Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said in a press release. “I believe that the trail will continue to attract local residents and those outside the Town as they visit and enjoy the view and being close to nature. The trail is one of my personal favorite places to enjoy in our Town.”

The Town says it will match the $450,000 grant. The Town’s Planning Department and Environmental Control Specialist, Kevin Braun applied for the grant funding.

The NYS Regional Economic Development Council Initiative award, established in 2011, looks to jumpstart the economy and create jobs. The Regional Councils are intended to empower communities, businesses, and academic leaders, as well as members of the public in each region, to develop strategic plans specifically tailored to their region’s unique strengths and resources in order to create jobs, improve quality of life and grow the economy.
