PORT WASHINGTON, NY—There are 24 American billionaires who amassed their wealth without earning a college degrees, Forbes magazine reported last week. Number five on the list is Port Washington's Don Vultaggio, founder of Arizona Beverages, known for iconic Arizona canned iced teas, still selling for 99 cents per can.
Vultaggio, 70, founded his company in 1992. According to Forbes, he is now worth $6.6 billion. The Flatbush Brooklyn native now lives in a stone manor on a private Sands Point peninsula with his wife Irene. Vultaggio told Forbes that he didn't even want to finish high school, viewing it as a waste of time. He bagged groceries at a supermarket after school, dreaming of making it big, he told the magazine.
Beating out Vultaggio on the no college-billionaire list is top earner Harold Hamm, an Oklahoma oil and gas tycoon with an estimated worth of $21.1 billion. Christy Walton of Walmart and David Green of Hobby Lobby are two other billionaires in the top five who didn't pursue higher education.
