NORTH HEMPSTEAD, NY—A proposed property tax cut would be the biggest in the Town of North Hempstead's history, Supervisor Jennifer DeSena says.

The Town Supervisor's office announced the cuts, part of a revised 2023 budget proposal, would slash property taxes by 11 percent. DeSena says the town had been overfunding its reserves and overtaxing residents.

“The town board has overtaxed our residents for years simply because they could, and I am proud to end that practice today," she said in a news release.

"Utilizing a portion of these bloated reserves will give our taxpayers some much needed relief as inflation continues to skyrocket, the economy remains volatile, gas prices are climbing again, and New Yorkers continue to experience some of the highest property taxes in the nation.”

The town has $26 million in general reserves, DeSena says, four times the mandated $7 million. Even with the proposed tax cuts, she says, the town will remain fiscally sound.
